HOW CAN MASSAGE HELP ME?
STRESS: Massage is one of the best-known
treatments for stress reduction. Reducing stress gives you more energy, improves your outlook on life, and in the process
reduces your likelihood of injury and illness. PREVENTION OF NEW INJURIES: Massage can help prevent injuries
that might be caused by stressing unbalanced muscle groups, or by favoring or forcing a painful, restricted area of your body
through an otherwise benign activity, but now is injurious to that body part. PAINFUL OR TIGHT MUSCLES: Massage
can relieve many types of muscle tightness, from a short-term muscle cramp to a chronically spastic muscle such as the shoulder
region. Massage acts directly on your muscles with stretching and kneading motions, which in turn stimulates the nervous system
to instruct muscles to relax even more. POSTURE: Massage releases restrictions in muscles, joints, and connective
tissue coverings, freeing your body to return to a more natural posture. Massage can also relieve the contracted muscles caused
by abnormal spinal curvatures such as scoliosis. FLUID RETENTION: Massage increases your circulation, which
in turn drains tissues of excess fluid caused by recent injury, surgery, or pregnancy. INJURIES: Massage
can help heal injuries such as tendonitis that develop over time, as well as ligament sprains or muscle strains caused by
a traumatic event. Massage reduces inflammation by increasing circulation, which removes cellular waste products that are
produced from your body in an attempt to heal itself. Certain massage techniques can help limit scar tissue formation in new
injuries and can reduce, or make more pliable, scar tissue around old injuries.
WELLNESS MASSAGE
Wellness massage is defined as a personal service initiated
by a patient to provide relaxation, increase body awareness and to create balance with the objectives of promoting health
and wellness. This type of treatment is utilized to counteract the pressures of daily life that tend to wear down both the
body and mind. By receiving regular treatments through relaxation massage, the ability to respond to stress is enhanced while
invigorating the physical well-being.
The following are examples of the types of treatment used in a wellness massage:
- Swedish Massage promotes overall relaxation through the use of various hand manipulations. A light or hard stroking
relaxes the muscle and improves circulation to surface vessels. This technique increases the flow of blood to the heart. Swedish
also uses compression and percussion techniques, such as kneading, squeezing and friction, which aid in the stretching of
muscles and tendons to increase the range of motion.
- Pregnancy Massage is performed by our skilled massage therapists trained in prenatal massage for expecting mothers.
This is a wonderful way to help relax the bodies and minds of women during the wonderful, exciting and sometimes uncomfortable
changes of pregnancy. The massage can also relieve fatigue, enhance sleep and calm an active baby.
- Sports Massage is a deep tissue massage used to stimulate circulation, increase lymphatic flow, relax muscle
spasms, relieve pain, increase range of motion and flexibility. Sports massage is important because one or all of the above
mentioned can be compromised as a result of participating in a sporting event or working out. Injury prevention and
improved sports performance are the positive results of regular sports massage.
HOW WILL THE MASSAGE FEEL?
Massage on normal tissue is almost always a pleasant
sensation. Massage in the area of injury or chronic pain may at first cause some discomfort, which usually lessons markedly
after the first couple minutes. Your massage therapist is skilled in knowing ways to minimize pain, and will work carefully
with what feels right to you.
KNOWING YOUR MASSAGE THERAPIST
It is important to feel comfortable with your massage
therapist. Ask questions or share concerns whenever they come up. Your questions are important and vital to receive the appropriate
care in all the areas that need to be addressed, and for your proper healing.
TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR MASSAGE
You are the expert on your healing. Your massage therapist
can suggest approaches, but you control the direction and pace of each massage.
You can choose whether or not to undress,
fully or partially. Your massage therapist will leave the room while you get ready, and you will be completely under the sheets
except for the part of your body being massaged. Your massage therapist can work through the sheet on sensitive areas, or
avoid them altogether if you prefer.
Tell your massage therapist what feels good and what does not. If one technique or
position is not relaxing or is painful, your massage therapist knows many others. You do not have to explain to your massage
therapist why, just let them know. Trust your feelings and you will get the most out of your session.
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER MY MASSAGE?
Many people leave a massage feeling more relaxed,
free from chronic aches and pains, and stress free. Occasionally, however, you might feel listless, sore, or tired. This can
occur but rarely happens, and is attributed to the releasing of toxins that have been encapsulated in your system. This feeling
usually goes away by the following day after a good nights rest and drinking plenty of water to flush your system.
MOST INSURANCES ACCEPTED
Massage therapy is covered by your insurance when the
care is directed by a physician for a diagnosed medical disorder.
If you choose to have your massage covered through insurance,
a brief examination will be given by Dr. Chad R. Kesner or by Dr. Kimberly C. Kesner to determine the type of massage therapy
to be implemented in your personal case. Drs. Chad & Kim Kesner are providers for: Sloans Lake, AETNA, Humana, United
Health Care, PHCS, MMA, First Health, Guardian, One Health Plan ands Great-West.
MEDICAL MASSAGE
Medical massage is defined as medically necessary massage, prescribed
by a doctor to generate an outcome based on a specific goal for improvement within a specific time frame. Medical massage
is utilized as an adjunctive treatment for individuals that have experienced any form of acute trauma. Acute trauma is described
as a physical injury caused by a violent or disruptive action (i.e. motor vehicle accident, a slip and fall, surgery, etc.)
Acute trauma can also be from psychological injury resulting in emotional shock or emotional alterations. The following are
examples of the types of treatment used to address acute trauma:
- Neuromuscular Re-Education and/or Trigger Point Therapy breaks the stress-tension-stress pain cycle by eliminating trigger
points in the body. Specific pressure coerces toxins at the nerve receptor sites increasing flexibility, strength and circulation,
while normalizing postural patterns. Releasing trigger points brings an increased range of motion and circulation leading
to pain relief in both acute and chronic conditions.
- Myofascial Release loosens adhesions within the fascia of the musculoskeletal system aiding in freer movement of individual
muscles without binding and restrictions.
- Deep Tissue separates muscles to allow them to work separately and more efficiently. This is achieved through the freeing
of adhesions in-between the individual muscles.
- Low-Grade Joint Mobilization facilitates faster recovery of soft tissue injuries, which is obtained through the use of
muscle energy technique. Our therapists are able to address joint restrictions commonly seen with acute injury.
